When purchasing a filter, the most important points are the filtration performance and selecting the right type of filtering for the particular process.
The filtration performance is defined by the amount of particles or chip that is to be separated, the size of the particles and which flows or volumes have to be treated.
There are an abundance of different types of filter, for example, bag filters, paper tape filters, cyclones, magnetic filters, centrifuges, etc., all of which have their advantages and disadvantages. Which filter is most suitable is entirely down to which performance a process requires, and which requirements are placed on maintenance, operation and investment costs.
What all systems have in common is that if the particles are not filtered away, they can cause a lot of problems.
Firstly, inorganic contaminants, e.g. metal filings, can cause wear in pumps and machines. A good example of this is bonding agents in grinding wheels and broken grit. These are extremely hard particles that travel round eroding the entire system.
Secondly, the particles increase the available surface in the system. As bacteria like to grow on surfaces, the particles then constitute an additional breeding ground for them.
