The spa at conference hotel Nova Park in Knivsta can show off almost the same chlorine content as the drinking water. This is thanks to the water purifying method used by the Swedish Cleantech Company Wallenius Water, a chemical-free method that copies nature’s own way of purifying. Satisfied visitors now avoid red itchy eyes and the pungent odour of chlorine.
Energy consumption and operational costs have also greatly been reduced, one of the main reasons that Nova Park is now Swan labelled.
The Nova Park conference facility in Knivsta wanted to offer a luxurious meetings venue for stressed businesspeople. The solution was Water Lounge, a spa and experience centre that differs somewhat to what is normally on offer at meetings venues. Features include a lake-type pool in the heart of the centre, mosaic steam sauna, Jacuzzi and a 5-metre tall open fireplace. To avoid the usual complaints of chlorine odour and itchy eyes, and to eliminate the threat of legionnaire’s bacteria in the Jacuzzi, Nova Park chose to purify the pool water using Wallenius’ energy and environmentally efficient AOT 900P water purifier, unique Swedish technology. The Wallenius AOT™ copies nature’s own way of purifying and has given Nova Park bathing water a chlorine content almost at the same low level as drinking water.

Håkan Elvhammar, Project Coordinator at Swimtec AB, who supplied the plant, gives a technical perspective:
“Basically, you always need good mechanical filtration, but it has to be complemented with, for example, an oxidation system. Among the aforementioned are UV systems, ozone systems and the Wallenius AOT system. Wallenius AOT™ consists of a pipe with an internal titanium dioxide-based surface. When water passes through the pipe and the lamp is lit, free radicals are formed that immediately purify the water. The Wallenius system also uses a light source, but not only for its disinfecting qualities. The light triggers a chemical process between the water and the titaniumdioxide inside the pipe. The difference compared to an ordinary UV plant is that AOT consumes less energy – in the UV plant, energy does the job, in the Wallenius AOT™ system, the natural chemical reaction does it. In addition, the AOT process reduces organisms that UV light has difficulty dealing with, such as sporulating bacteria for example. This results in a one-hundred per cent disinfection and the chlorine content can be greatly reduced.
